Call for Event Proposals for 2017 Chicago
Share |
(Deadline September 30, 2016 @ 5pm CT)

Successful proposals will be for high–profile events, designed to appeal to and attract a strong audience and to highlight the activities of the groups.  Previous events have included roundtable discussions (Teaching Race and Media in Post-racial/Post-Trayvon America and Public Media 2.0: a Conversation on the Future of Urban Documentary and Social Change), an archival screening event (Archival Activism: Reclaiming and Remixing the Battle of Seattle), and a tribute (Remembering the Life and Legacy of Alexander Doty).

Two of the special events featured at the 2017 Chicago conference will be chosen from proposals submitted by caucuses and scholarly interest groups (SIGs).

The events can be organized by one or more groups of caucuses and/or scholarly interest groups. Organizers are encouraged to collaborate with other SCMS groups and also to seek the support and sponsorship of SCMS standing committees if appropriate.

The event should run between 60-90 minutes. Possibilities for events include a roundtable involving noted media scholars or professionals; a screening followed by a Q&A with a media professional, an activist, or a scholar; a workshop focused on a pressing issue of contemporary interest with well-known experts as speakers; or other events that are likewise exceptional. Workshops are intended to be dialogical, interactive, and productive workspaces between participants and the audience.  Roundtable events emphasize the interaction between the participants, led by a chair/moderator with input from the audience.

These events are separate and distinct from the meetings or panels and workshops sponsored by the caucuses and scholarly interest groups in the conference schedule. The caucus and SIG liaisons and the conference program committee and host committee chairs will evaluate the event proposals and recommend the successful ones to the SCMS Board of Directors in October.  Conference budget limitations and scheduling will be taken into consideration in the determination of which events are accepted.  The successful events will be scheduled for the evenings of Wednesday, March 22, and Thursday, March 23.

Note: To be publicized or published in the final conference program a final description of the event details should be submitted to the SCMS Office ( no later than January 13, 2017 at 5pm CT.  No late details will be accepted for the printed program after this date.  If a group or groups are not able to coordinate and put the event together by this date, the proposed event may have to be cancelled or may not be scheduled.  Membership and conference registration fee waiver applications will be required for event participants who are not members of the Society, so if your SIG will need one be sure to put in your request by January 13, 2017 at 5pm CT.

If you will need a
hotel menu to serve refreshments at your event please contact Leslie LeMond

For Screening Events: the submitter must confirm with the filmmaker/distributor that the film is available in the required format (Region 1/NTSC DVD).  If the filmmaker will be attending the screening event a waiver request online must be completed.
