Social Media at Chicago 2013

Dear SCMS Members,

The conference is only a day away, so here are a few reminders and announcements regarding social media at the conference.This year, our social media initiatives are aimed at expanding and enhancing the conference experience—for conference-goers and those of you who can't join us in Chicago this year.

The "Annual Conference Live: Chicago 2013" Hub

Check out this year's online conference hub for updates on new video content and other announcements (and keep an eye out for our student videographers, who may find you in the halls to ask for an interview or comment).

The online conference also features blogs by Alexander Cho, Racquel Gates, Tim Havens, Alexandra Juhasz and Chuck Kleinhans, which they will update throughout the conference. If you're interested in blogging at the official online conference hub yourself, you can join them. Just click "Join Group” at the top of the online conference hub page, follow the link to the open blog, and add a post.

Twitter and Facebook

Our Twitter (@SCMStudies) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/SCMStudies) accounts will be active during the conference, with guest tweeters Phoebe Bronstein, Liz Ellcessor and Leah Shafer taking over the Twitter feed on select days during the conference.

Don't forget to use the #SCMS13 hashtag when you tweet your own news and notes from the conference!

Cinema Journal Live Tweeting

We are excited to announce that this year Cinema Journal will have a group of reporters tweeting from panels, workshops and other conference events on behalf of CJ. These reporters will introduce themselves to panel members and ask permission to tweet reports on individual papers. They will not report on papers if individuals request it.

The CJ reporters hope to provide a service to the SCMS community. Live tweeting allows delegates at the conference to benefit from, and engage in debates around, panels they cannot attend. The 'backchannel' of twitter discussion adds a new dimension to panel Q&As.

Perhaps most importantly, live tweeting enables those unable to attend the conference—in particular our international members—to access the program's diverse scholarship and the vibrancy of the community.

Follow @CJatSCMS to stay in touch with the latest from the annual SCMS conference—whether you're there or not! The CJ team for 2013 includes @amandaannklein (AK), @annehelen (AP), @virtualcasey (CM), @kristenwarner (KW) and @greeney28 (KP) all of whom will sign their tweets with initials.

The Workshop Live Stream

We're hoping to make this a more frequent occurrence at future conferences, so we're testing our first live stream of a workshop this year in Chicago. The IT Committee-sponsored workshop "Scholarly Social Media: Successes, Failures, and Future" will be simulcast online here on Thursday, March 7, 2013 from 9:00-10:45am CST.  Not only can you watch the live stream from anywhere, but you can chat with the participants virtually whether you're in the room or across the globe.
