SCMS is its members. The Society is a member-run organization.

In addition to service on Committees and the Board of Directors, our Caucuses, Scholarly Interest Groups (SIGs), and Graduate Student Organization (GSO) facilitate members' involvement in and education about the organization. Such groups also offer members opportunities to support and to network with other SCMS members regarding pedagogy, research, publication, and career development, and to build relationships with scholars and organizations outside the Society.

Caucuses

Caucuses are formed and maintained to provide fellowship and networking opportunities for their members, advocacy within SCMS, and outreach to un- or underrepresented persons and groups in other academic disciplines. Caucuses also support scholarship by, and about, those historically un- or underrepresented groups within SCMS.

Scholarly Interest Groups

SIGs are groups comprised of persons who share an interest in a particular medium, a genre, a methodology, the media of a particular nation or region, or any other subcategory within the rubric of cinema and media studies. SIGs are formed and maintained to provide fellowship and networking opportunities for their members, and to support scholarship in that scholarly interest within SCMS.

Graduate Student Organization

Graduate students constitute the largest membership group in SCMS, and represent the next generation of film, television, and new media scholars. Graduate student concerns are addressed through the Graduate Student Organization, which was formed in the late eighties to provide fellowship, support, and advocacy for the Society's graduate student members.

Precarious Labor Organization

The Precarious Labor Organization dedicates itself to supporting and advocating for Society members facing uncertain job security and challenges in professional progression. Committed to acknowledging the diverse experiences that arise from contingent labor conditions, the PLO recognizes the impact varying levels of privilege or lack thereof have on individuals. Understanding the detrimental effects of precarious labor on the broader mission of higher education, the PLO stresses that its repercussions extend beyond the directly affected individuals. Therefore, the organization asserts that the collective effort to enhance labor conditions in higher education is a shared responsibility. As a result, PLO membership is inclusive and open to all SCMS members and affiliates, irrespective of their employment status.

Report Election Results

It is important for each caucus, SIG, and coordinating committee to notify the SCMS office regarding election results. This allows the SCMS office to have an accurate record of all elected individuals for your caucus, SIG, or committee. Please complete the election results form after your election to ensure all records and the website is up to date.
