SCMS depends on the dedicated work of our membership. At every level of our governance structure, from the Board of Directors to committees, appointees are volunteers. We are able to reward the very best scholarship in our field through award committees and provide crucial service to the discipline of cinema and media studies via our standing committees. The Program Committee reviews over 1,000 conference proposals for the annual conference.
To volunteer for service on one of the SCMS committees, please fill out the form below by Friday, May 16, 2025, 5:00 PM US Central Time.
Eligible volunteer positions on committees are limited and change annually based on vacancies and committee composition. It is recommended that you select more than one committee of interest. Please note that volunteers are not likely to be placed in the same committee assignment in successive years, especially for the program committee. If you would like to volunteer for a committee you do not see listed here, please contact committees@scmstudies.org or the SCMS Office.
Any volunteers who are not placed into an available committee position will be contacted in the Fall following the volunteering period. Please note that all committee members must be current SCMS members in good standing; if you accept a committee role, you must renew your SCMS membership if it is not currently active.
Standing committee service is a three-year commitment (e.g., July 1, 2025–June 30, 2028) in accordance with the SCMS Annual Calendar. Award committee service is typically a two-year commitment, and the Program Committee is a one-year commitment. If invited to join a committee, your invitation letter will include specific details about your requested term of service. To assist us with future planning, please keep the expected service commitment in mind when applying, though we understand that your availability may change in the future!
We extend our deepest gratitude to members who choose to volunteer for service, and we encourage everyone in the membership to get involved.
