About Us
The Queer and Trans Caucus of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies was formed in 1991 to promote and support the study of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer history, theory, and criticism in relation to screen
and media cultures. Through our activities, such as sponsoring panels and workshops, hosting events and screenings, and organizing a Queer Mentorship program, the Caucus aims to foster the creation of a community of scholars
and producers of queer media. In recent years, the Caucus has been joined and supported by an increasing number of members who are devoted to transgender media studies. Rather than collapsing transgender modes of self-expression
and cultural production into the term “queer,” trans studies asks us to consider the specific histories and material experiences of transgender bodies and cultures. In the summer of 2019, members voted to change our name
from Queer Caucus to Queer and Trans Caucus in order to recongize the interconnected yet different areas of research and sociopolitical interests.
